Miika Mäkelä works as a Senior Software Designer in the Embedded Solutions team. Miika’s best workdays consist of coding, but sometimes he might, for example, find himself flying a drone in Paloheinä of Helsinki. Not many people know that Miika's dream job as a child was to be a postman - it remains to be seen if his childhood dream will come true, perhaps in retirement, as an email server administrator.

"I studied mathematics and physics at a technical university. At the time, I was considering whether I wanted to be a researcher or direct my skills towards the corporate world. I chose the latter and started working at Huld on various projects related to algorithm development and data processing. I got to work with client's product development, create new measurement tools, analyze data and develop new algorithms.

Today, my work mainly focuses on technical design, i.e. how to implement the resulting software. Occasionally, I am also working on projects related to artificial intelligence and machine vision."

"The answer is simple – the best days at work consist of coding. It's like solving an equation, constant puzzle building and problem solving. It's important to me that I can take time to immerse myself in tasks that require concentration each workday.

Customer and teamwork are also a big part of my job. Communication about the progress of the project, the stages and any challenges that may arise is crucial. It’s the best way to make sure that the work progresses in the right direction and in the best way possible."

"Being able to clearly communicate complexities and technical details to another person. For me, the easiest problems in software development are mathematics, but the most challenging part is making sure that all parties understand what is being discussed.

In all my work, I try to make sure that everyone, from clients to team members, is heard. That way, we can find the best solution to the challenges together."

"Oh, this is a difficult question! I'm lucky to have encountered very few preconceptions about what I do. What you sometimes hear is "Oh you code, that's difficult!". But at the end of the day, coding is a skill like any other, and anyone can learn it if they want to."
